The denim apron, a trade garment

This selvedge denim apron meets a simple requirement: protect without restricting. It stops dust, shavings, flour and splashes, and follows the movements of someone who wears it for hours every day. It is cut loose and straight, unisex, with generous volume that leaves room for the arms and chest. It works at the bench as well as behind a counter.

Cut and sizing

One standard size: the loose cut and adjustable straps fit most builds, men and women. The waist cord finishes the fit. The size guide gives flat measurements if you want to check the length.

How to wear a denim apron

Over a chambray shirt or a henley, in the workshop or in the kitchen. Raw denim patinates with time: where it was an even blue, lighter areas appear where the body bends it, like a map of repeated gestures. Every stain and every crease becomes a readable trace of a trade.

Care
  • Wash it as rarely as possible: denim patinates better the less it is washed, and airing it between working days is often enough.
  • When needed, 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times, because indigo naturally bleeds.
  • No tumble dryer: air dry in the shade.
  • Iron at medium heat on the reverse if necessary.

A gusseted pocket and two loops

On the front, a large gusseted pocket expands as you fill it: tools, a notebook, a pencil, a tape measure or a phone stay within reach. Two loops complete the set, to hang a cloth or a pair of gloves. At the waist, a tied cord adjusts the apron against the body, with no metal buckle that could scratch a worktop.

Patina and durability

In three years, this apron will carry the trace of your trade.

An apron is judged after a thousand hours of work, not the day you unwrap it. This one is cut from a 14 oz Japanese selvedge, made in France, roomy enough to leave the arms free. Flour, shavings, grease or coffee: every trade will leave a different imprint. Here is how the cloth will receive it.

  1. deepest indigo, firm cloth: the denim bears no mark yet.

  2. it relaxes at the fold points and begins to follow your silhouette.

  3. movement creases set in: they are what will draw the patina.

  4. cold, inside out and as late as possible, to keep the contrast that is building.

  5. edges, pockets and borders lighten, while the blue stays deep elsewhere.

  6. the fold zones contrast sharply: marks that look like no one but you.

  7. one year: pale blue at the wear points, dense indigo in the protected areas.

  8. the denim is supple but keeps its hand; the seams hold the tension.

  9. nearly three years of lived indigo; a snag is mended in the workshop rather than replacing the piece.

Craftspeople know it: you work better in a garment that doesn't get in your way and that you are proud to wear in front of your customers. This apron is both. It protects, it follows the gesture, and over the years it will become the most personal piece in your workshop, the one nobody else will have patinated the way you did.

Adjustable brass straps

The straps are cut from the same raw denim as the apron. They adjust through oxidised brass buttons, copper in colour, that stand up to the strain of a working day. They frame the back without pressing on the shoulders, and the adjustment lets you set the bib height to suit your build and your work.

Okayama selvedge, French leather patch

The cloth is a 14 oz raw denim, about 475 g/m², woven on selvedge looms in the Okayama region of Japan. Tight and dense, it resists abrasion while staying supple. On the front, the patch is French-tanned leather, chosen to take on an amber patina without stiffening. The apron is made in France.

FAQ

We are here to help you

Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you choose with confidence.

Contact us?
What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.

Every piece is designed to last, evolve and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we design our own weaves, then have them woven by the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. A new cloth can take up to a year to come to life.

This exacting standard is what sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
