The workshirt was born in the early 20th century in the United States as the work shirt of labourers and farmers: it protects from sun, dust and tools without restricting the arms. Our men's denim shirt brings back its cloth, a 100% cotton 9 oz denim, where an ordinary denim shirt settles for about 5 oz. At this weight the collar stays straight, the shoulders hold, and the cloth takes real use rather than decorative use.
Cut and sizing
Straight cut. From S to XXL, half chest runs from 53 to 61 cm (20.9 to 24 in), length from 70 to 74 cm (27.6 to 29.1 in) and sleeve from 63 to 66 cm (24.8 to 26 in). Take your usual size to wear it buttoned, or one size up if you want it as an overshirt. The size guide helps you decide.
How to wear a men's denim shirt
Sleeves rolled up, with a navy watch cap, as in our photos. Buttoned over selvedge jeans, or open over an ecru henley. Under a work jacket: two blues, never the same tone.
Care
- Wash it as rarely as possible.
- When needed: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately from light laundry the first few times, because indigo bleeds.
- No tumble dryer: air dry in the shade.
- The patina will keep changing slowly, at the elbows and cuffs.
Shirt or overshirt, depending on the day
The density of the cloth gives it two uses. Buttoned, it is a shirt, worn over a T-shirt with the collar open. Open, it becomes a light overshirt, which a light denim cannot do. Worn over raw jeans, it plays on two blues of different depth.
The patina is created before sale: the shirt is washed and then stonewashed, which means washed with pumice stones that lighten the colour in patches, as on a shirt worn for years. This treatment also breaks the stiffness of new denim, so you can wear it from day one.

An ordinary denim shirt weighs about 5 oz and hangs limp. This one weighs 9 oz, like the American work shirts of the early 20th century: the collar stays straight, the shoulders hold. Stonewashed, it wears without a break-in. Here is what it becomes with time.

Buttoned, it is a shirt. Open over a T-shirt, it is an overshirt. You buy two pieces for the price of one, in a cloth that really has what it takes to last. It is the garment you grab every morning without thinking.
A work shirt collar and cuffs
The collar stand is built with a double yoke in the American way, so the collar keeps its shape. The cuffs are rounded, with a gauntlet placket at the sleeve, and a reinforcing gusset strengthens the bottom of the sides. Under the collar, the woven Champ de Manoeuvres Heritage label.
Pockets, mother-of-pearl and stitching
The two chest pockets are double-stitched. They close, like the shirt, with four-hole mother-of-pearl buttons, sewn crosswise to last. All the stitching is tight, at 8 stitches per centimetre, in midnight blue Coats thread. The shirt is made in Morocco.
