The men's waffle henley, from rowing
The henley takes its name from the English town of Henley-on-Thames, where it was the traditional dress of rowers; the first royal regatta was rowed there in 1839. It is a collarless pullover with a round neck, closed by a placket of 8 to 13 cm carrying two to five buttons. This men's waffle henley keeps the shape, and holds the place it has held since: dressier than a T-shirt, simpler than a shirt.
Cut and sizing
Fitted cut, which draws the shoulders without squeezing; the long sleeves reach down to the wrist, held by the rib. From S to 2XL. Take your usual size; the size guide helps you decide if you hesitate.
How to wear a men's waffle henley
On its own, with jeans or fatigue trousers, as in our photos. Under a quilted vest, for a light outdoor outfit. Under a suede leather jacket or a work jacket, the relief of the knit answers the material of the jacket. Ecru goes with everything; indigo and khaki give more structure.

A corozo-button placket
The placket closes with corozo buttons stamped C.D.M. Corozo, or vegetable ivory, is the hardened endosperm of the fruit of a tropical American palm: a dense, smooth material, cream in colour, long used to make buttons. On a thick knit, it holds better than a light button.

The waffle traps air and gives a warmth jersey doesn't have. It is the henley for cool days, on its own or under an overshirt. Thicker than a T-shirt, simpler than a sweater: exactly what mid-season needs.
A 350 g/m² waffle knit
The knit is made in relief, in a honeycomb pattern. These small cells trap air: the cotton breathes while keeping light insulation, which makes the waffle henley a real mid-season layer. At 350 g/m², the cotton is dense; it holds its shape and gains suppleness with wear. The cloth is pre-washed in the workshop, which stabilises it, relaxes the tensions of the knit and gives it a slightly lived-in look from the start.
Seams made to last
The collar and cuffs are finished in rib edges, which keep the fit and let you push the sleeves up easily to work. The seams are set in a five-thread cover stitch, which reinforces the wear areas. Cotton, the most common material for a henley, washes easily at home. The henley is made in Portugal.
