This men's waterproof parka owes its weather protection to a single thing: the way its cotton is woven. No membrane, no plastic film glued inside. Ventile® was developed in England during the Second World War for Royal Air Force pilots, who needed a cloth that was both waterproof and breathable. After the war, polar explorers adopted it for exactly that breathability.
Cut and sizing
Fitted military cut, with a hood and a mid-thigh length. Sizes S to XL. Take your usual size, or one size up if you want to layer a thick knit underneath. The size guide helps you decide.
How to wear a waterproof parka
As a city parka, over a white oxford shirt or a work jacket: the military cut stays sharp. In changeable weather, showers and long walks, it is at home. In winter, with the Ventile® liner vest underneath: the two pieces form a two-layer system cut from the same material.
Care
- Machine washable at home, dry cleaning is not recommended: 30 °C (86 °F), delicate cycle, mild liquid detergent with no bleaching agent.
- Never use fabric softener: it clogs the weave and stops the fibres from swelling properly.
- No tumble dryer. Air dry in the shade.

A cotton that closes up in the rain
The cloth is made of extra-long-staple cotton fibres, combed and then woven at extreme density. On contact with water, the fibres swell: the gaps in the weave close and the water stays out. Once dry, the cloth opens again and lets body vapour escape. That is what separates it from a membrane jacket, which keeps you dry from the outside but traps sweat as soon as you walk fast.
Let's be honest about its limits: it resists steady, prolonged rain, but in a downpour lasting several hours a membrane is still more waterproof. Ventile® trades a little waterproofing for a lot of breathability.
A canvas that ages instead of breaking down
A membrane eventually delaminates. Ventile® cotton softens with the years. Inside, a Rightemp® thermal canvas lining, a polyester and polyamide blend, keeps body heat without adding bulk. Two welt pockets on the front. It closes with genuine horn buttons rather than plastic, on a piece made to last. The parka is made entirely in France.
