The word caban comes from Arabic, through Italian and Provençal. Between the 15th and 17th centuries, it named in the Mediterranean a short coat worn by sailors, and even pirates. Navies then adopted it and fixed its form. Everything in a men's pea coat answers a constraint of life on board: short so as not to hinder manoeuvres, double-breasted to double the thickness over the chest, and a wide collar that turns up against the wind. Ours keeps exactly that logic.

Cut and sizing
Structured cut that stops below the hip: that is the proportion of a pea coat, not a length flaw. Depending on size, from S to XL, half chest runs from 52 to 56 cm (20.5 to 22 in) and length from 80 to 84 cm (31.5 to 33.1 in). Take your usual size to wear it over a shirt and a fine knit, one size up to layer a thick knit or a jacket.
How to wear a men's pea coat
Over a turtleneck or an anthracite lambswool sweater: the original use. Over a work jacket, which its short cut allows without stacking hems. With Japanese jeans and a wool beanie. For a longer, lined version, see the Pea Coat.
Care
The essentials come down to two gestures: air it, and brush with the nap after wearing. If a wash becomes necessary, by hand and cold, with a wool detergent, without rubbing or wringing; press out the water, roll it in a towel, then dry flat, reshaped, away from any heat source. Steam from a distance. Store on a wide hanger, away from light, with cedar.
790 g/m² of wool melton
The melton is woven in Portugal, in pure wool, and weighs 790 g/m². At this density the wool is fulled to the point that the wind no longer passes through: the pea coat becomes windproof without a membrane. This mass shows in how it holds. The coat keeps a sharp shoulder and does not sag after a season.
You have to accept it: this is a heavy coat, made for sharp cold, not for a mild autumn. Fulled wool repels fine rain and sea spray, but under a prolonged downpour it takes on water; it is not a raincoat.

At this weight, the wool stops the wind on its own, without a membrane. That is the difference between a pea coat that looks warm and one that really is. Six pockets, a shoulder that doesn't sag: it is the coat you bring out every winter for years.
Navy or anthracite
Two colours: a dark navy blue, and an anthracite grey mixed with black. Collar up over an ecru sweater, or open over raw jeans, as in our photos. The wide collar is not there for looks: turned up, it really protects the neck from a side wind.
Three inside pockets, like a tailored jacket
Outside, two buttoned pockets at hip height. Inside, three pockets: the first welted with a flap, for the wallet; the second placed low, on the heart side, for a notebook; the third, on the right side, rounded and cut from the same melton as the outside, for a card holder or keys. For a short trip, the pea coat does without a bag.
The body is lined with Italian oxford cloth, which slides over a shirt, and the buttons are horn of French origin.
