Features

• 380 g/m² French Terry: a hundred grams heavier than a standard sweatshirt, the difference between lasting one year and ten
• Semi-brushed fleece: maintains its thickness over time, unlike a fully brushed fleece which flattens out
• Slub exterior: yarn of variable thickness, for an irregular texture rather than an industrial look
• Half-moon back yoke: inherited from sportswear, it prevents the neckline from sagging
• Flatlock ribbed trim: flat stitching with no interior ridge, resistant to pulling
• Vintage factory wash: the knit is stabilized, ensuring the garment won’t shrink
• Knitted in Portugal: premium cotton, European spinning and knitting
• Machine washable: wash inside out at 30°C, do not tumble dry

The men's navy sweatshirt, in French terry

This men's navy sweatshirt is judged first by its material: a 380 g/m² French terry, 100% cotton. French terry, or loopback fleece, differs from classic fleece by its reverse, where the yarn loops stay visible instead of being brushed into fluff. Here, the inside is semi-brushed, halfway between the two. A fully brushed fleece is softer at first wear, but its fluff packs down and the garment flattens; the semi-brushed keeps its thickness and warmth over time. At 380 g/m², it is a proper winter sweatshirt, worn on its own until the end of autumn.

Cut and sizing

Fitted, not shaped: the sweatshirt follows the body without squeezing it. From XS to 3XL. Take your usual size; the size guide helps you decide if you hesitate.

How to wear a men's navy sweatshirt

On its own, over a white T-shirt: navy stays sober. Under a work jacket, the thickness of the 380 g/m² replaces a middle layer. With flannel trousers, the contrast between fleece and wool avoids the tracksuit effect. Over a blue oxford shirt, collar out, the neckline lets the collar through without strain. It also comes in khaki.

Care

Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times, because dyed cotton bleeds slightly. No tumble dryer and no fabric softener. Air dry in the shade; iron at medium heat, on the reverse.

Sportswear finishing

The rib edges, 100% cotton, are topstitched in flat lock: a flat seam that creates no ridge inside and resists pulling better than a simple overlock. At the back, a rounded piece of cloth, the half-moon yoke, structures the top of the back and stops the neckline sagging forward. Under the ribbed round neck, a triangular gusset completes the hold of the neckline. These details are barely visible, but they are what make the sweatshirt hold.

Patina and durability

In three years, this navy sweatshirt will have kept its neckline.

A sweatshirt is judged by its material. This one is a 380 g/m² French terry, 100% cotton, semi-brushed inside: a fully brushed fleece is softer at first, but it flattens. A half-moon yoke at the back stops the neckline sagging. Here is how it holds.

  1. firm material, solid color, clean finishes.

  2. the piece softens where it works the most.

  3. wear creases mark themselves and return from one wear to the next.

  4. follow the composition instructions; excessive heat and tumble dryers are to be avoided.

  5. borders and friction zones soften first.

  6. the color shades with use, without aging all at once.

  7. the piece is made: supple, familiar, always holding.

  8. a seam, a button, a snag is mended in the workshop.

  9. nearly three years: a well-kept piece gains in character what it loses in newness.

The difference between a sweatshirt that lasts a year and one that lasts ten is a hundred grams of material and a built collar. Navy goes with everything, from jeans to chinos. It is the everyday sweatshirt, made to last.

A sport garment turned basic

The sweatshirt was born in 1920: Benjamin Russell Jr., a football player at the University of Alabama, wanted to replace itchy wool jerseys with cotton. Cotton won, and the sweatshirt has hardly changed shape since. It has remained a simple garment, and navy is its most sober version: it stays sharp where a coloured sweatshirt quickly looks sloppy. The outside is slubbed, with a slightly irregular grain rather than a smooth one. The sweatshirt is knitted in Portugal, then goes through a vintage wash that stabilises the knit and softens the hand.

FAQ

We are here to help you

Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you choose with confidence.

Contact us?
What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.

Every piece is designed to last, evolve and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we design our own weaves, then have them woven by the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. A new cloth can take up to a year to come to life.

This exacting standard is what sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
