The men's Hawaiian shirt, born in Honolulu
According to several sources, the aloha shirt appeared in Honolulu in the 1920s or early 1930s, at Musa-Shiya the Shirtmaker, the shop of Kōichirō Miyamoto, who cut shirts in colourful Japanese prints. The merchant Ellery Chun, in Waikiki, also claims its invention; he may have been the first to mass-produce it, and registered the "Aloha Shirt" trademark in 1937. The term "aloha shirt" appears for the first time in an advertisement by Musa-Shiya, in the Honolulu Advertiser of 28 June 1935. This men's Hawaiian shirt takes up the principle: a bold print, here palm trees, on a loose short-sleeved cut.

Cut and sizing
Straight cut, roomy at the shoulders, with about 10 cm (4 in) of ease around the chest: it is worn open over a T-shirt or closed on its own, and always untucked, as its use dictates. From S to XXL. Take your usual size; the size chart and the size guide help you decide.
How to wear a men's Hawaiian shirt
Open over a white T-shirt with raw selvedge jeans, as in our photos. Closed, on its own, with military bermuda shorts for a full summer look, on holiday or in town. Under a light work jacket, Cuban collar out, to go from the office to the terrace.
Care
Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times. No tumble dryer and no fabric softener: viscose fears heat. Air dry in the shade; iron at medium heat on the reverse to protect the print; slightly damp, viscose smooths out more easily.
A Cuban collar with a hidden button
The collar is an 8 cm Cuban collar, set on a facing. A discreet button on the collar stand lets you close it when you want a sharper look; left open, it falls flat, as on the original shirts. All the buttons are corozo, the vegetable ivory, a dense, smooth material taken from the fruit of a tropical American palm.

A failed Hawaiian shirt looks like fancy dress; a good Hawaiian shirt makes the summer. This one falls like silk and is worn open over a T-shirt or closed for dinner. It is the piece that says "holiday" even on a Tuesday in town.
A viscose as fluid as silk
The shirt is cut from a bamboo viscose, light and fluid, with a feel close to silk. Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fibre; here, the cellulose comes from bamboo. It drapes softly, moves with the body and does not cling to the skin in the heat. The palm print keeps its colours crisp on this smooth material. The shirt is made in Portugal, in a specialist workshop that works to our specifications.
