The large pockets that give cargo trousers their name come from the British battle dress, worn from 1938: they were used to carry field dressings and maps. The American army took up the idea during the Second World War on its paratroopers' uniform, to hold rations and ammunition. The Battle Dress Uniform, the American combat uniform from the early 1980s, then set the grammar we know: gusseted thigh pockets, buttoned flaps, a drawcord at the hem. These men's khaki cargo trousers keep the whole architecture.

Cut and sizing
The period cargo, straight and bloused, was designed to be tucked into boots; over a low shoe, it thickens the leg. Ours stays wide at the top of the thigh, then tapers clearly toward the ankle. The drawcord at the hem, inherited from the military model, tightens the bottom further if you like. The very tight cloth does not stretch in wear: if in doubt, the size guide helps you decide. How to wear men's khaki cargo trousers
With a work jacket: two functional pieces, provided the shades differ. With knitwear, a indigo sailor sweater for example, which softens the military side and avoids the fancy-dress effect. Turned up over sneakers, a short cuff frees the ankle and shows the hidden detail. They also come in black and navy.

Khaki, the colour of dust
Khaki was not chosen for its looks. The word comes from Persian khāki, "earthy", "dusty"; the British army in India used it from 1848, and the shade attached itself to land armies at the beginning of the 20th century. You had to blend in with the terrain. Our khaki is a muted green, close to dry earth: it is the original colour of the cargo, and the one that goes most naturally with work jackets.

Khaki is the original colour of the cargo, the one that makes sense. Its pockets are really usable, and its drawcord at the hem comes from the military model. It is the trouser for active weekends, which you keep for years.
A tight cloth, finished inside
The cloth is a very tight canvas of 296 g/m², woven from 96% cotton and 4% wool: the wool adds a little warmth in winter without changing the feel of the cotton. It is treated to be water-repellent, which is enough for a shower, without making them rain trousers. Inside, the pockets and waistband are lined with an ecru cotton, and the crotch is built with flat-felled seams, the strongest for an area that works hard. The trousers are made in Morocco.
Gusseted pockets with no visible button
The two side pockets are gusseted: they gain volume when filled and stay flat when empty. They close with a flap, and a finish we developed hides the corozo buttons entirely underneath: opening stays easy, but nothing sticks out. At the back, flap pockets and waist adjustment straps complete the set. One last detail hides under the hem; you discover it by turning the cuff up.
