These Italian army socks come from a stock made for the Italian army and never used, which is what is called deadstock. They are new, but they are no longer made: when the stock runs out, it is gone for good. They were made in Italy to a service-issue construction, to hold up every day and stay comfortable in a shoe.
Size
One size, for EU shoe sizes 39 to 45 (UK 6 to 10.5, US 7 to 11.5): the stretch knit adapts to the shape of the foot. Thin despite their density, they fit as well in a dress shoe as in a boot.
How to wear Italian army socks
In ankle boots or work shoes, with fatigue trousers or khaki cargos: the olive carries the military wardrobe down to the ankle. With chinos and dress shoes, their fineness lets them go unnoticed. For a hot climate and long walks, look at our British army socks.

Mercerised cotton, an unexpected fineness
The yarn is mercerised cotton. Mercerisation, invented in 1844 by John Mercer, treats cotton with caustic soda: the fibre becomes stronger, takes dye better and gains a lustrous look. Knitted in a dense, fine satin weave, the yarn gives a sock with a smooth hand and a slightly shiny finish, far from the rustic image that goes with military surplus.

A long model
The model is long, as military issue required. The sock does not slip down into the shoe during the day, and the lower leg stays covered when you sit, which is the only time a short sock shows. The knit is stretchy and breathable, and fits the foot without bunching or squeezing the ankle.
