This men's military overshirt is not a reproduction. It is a period garment, recovered and then restored by hand: the cloth has already been used, and the whole job is to bring it back into shape without removing what gives it value. Its marks are not imitated: they come from its first use. The cloth is an old cotton herringbone, dense, with a dry hand. This weave dressed several armies during and after the Second World War; in the American forces, these cotton herringbone work uniforms were called HBT, for herringbone twill.

How to wear a men's military overshirt
Open in mid-season, over a T-shirt or a sweatshirt, like a light overshirt. Closed, like a light jacket over a fine knit. It goes with selvedge jeans, straight trousers or cargo trousers, and is worn with boots, leather sneakers or derbies. On a plain wardrobe, it carries the outfit on its own.
Care
Wash at 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, with a mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times. Absolutely avoid hot water and the tumble dryer: old cloth tolerates them badly. Air dry in the shade; iron at medium heat, on the reverse.
Restoring without erasing
An old military cloth has a patina, marks, sometimes repairs. The temptation would be to make everything uniform; we do the opposite. The treatment is carried out without altering the properties of the original cloth, which rules out harsh washes and colour touch-ups. The irregularities are not effects: they are traces. Each piece therefore keeps its own patina, and two overshirts are never quite alike. The cloth, a little stiff at first, softens without loosening.

A thread that gives way before the cloth
The re-assembly is done with 100% cotton thread, from an unused stock of the French army of the 1950s, contemporary with the piece. This choice is about repair, not nostalgia. A modern synthetic thread is stronger than the old cotton around it: under tension, it is the cloth that tears along the seam. A period cotton thread gives way before the cloth, and a seam can be redone, where a torn old cloth is hard to repair. The stamped corozo buttons are fixed with a reinforced seam, and the aged cotton label is printed in Toulouse.
