Description

Today, I invite you on a journey through the ages to discover the legendary pea coat, also known as the pea coat. This long, loose coat, worn by sailors since the 18th century, has built an enduring reputation as a shield against cold and humidity.

Visualize, over the centuries, intrepid sailors proudly wearing this iconic garment, braving raging seas and merciless storms to defend their homeland. The two rows of buttons, the possibility of closing the coat on the right or left depending on the wind, and the high collar offering total protection up to the neck make the pea coat a faithful companion in the most rigorous conditions.

The origins of the pea coat spark debate among historians. Some say it was inspired by a wool cape worn by Berber pirates, while others say it was invented by Dutch sailors in the 17th century.

Over time, the pea coat has written its own history, becoming a key player in military fashion. Adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1740, it then conquered the French Navy and the US Navy in 1888. Witness to world wars, from the Bay of Pigs landings to the Vietnam War, the pea coat was the companion of choice of heroes of the story.

In the 1960s, this military coat transformed into a style symbol, moving from the battlefields to the shoulders of iconic figures such as Prevert, Brel, Gainsbourg, Robert Redford, Al Pacino and Steve McQueen.

Today we are proud to introduce our modern interpretation of the pea coat within our Pacifica Military collection. Designed for war, worn in a peaceful world, our pea coat embodies the perfect alliance between history and contemporary style.

Traditionally made of wool, our pea coat is distinguished by its exceptional resistance to cold and humidity. In its early days, a clever mixture of tar, turpentine and soot made it perfectly waterproof. Today, while respecting this heritage, it is also available in lighter materials such as polyester and nylon, although less warm and durable.

The buttons, often made of brass or nickel, are decorated with a marine anchor, an enduring symbol of the navy. Its origin remains uncertain, but some historians place it in the 18th century, when British sailors adopted these anchor-shaped buttons to identify their uniform. Others see the sea anchor as a constant reminder to sailors of their inseparable bond with their ship, even on the open sea.

Our pea coat, enhanced by an exceptional French wool fabric from Jules Tournier® , a company with a living heritage, a thick woolen cloth of exceptional quality in a deep midnight blue color. This fabric is GOTS certified and combined with a quilted lining made in the north of France, inspired by the M65 liner with an ultra soft down jacket-like feel, thus offering an incomparable textural contrast.

This magnificent pea coat embodies the perfect marriage between tradition and modernity. Meticulously designed, it is carefully assembled in a French workshop with unique know-how in handle parts. As for the brand label, it is designed, manufactured and sewn in France as well.

The cut of our pea coat has been carefully designed to guarantee absolute comfort. By opting for your usual size, you ensure an authentic period silhouette, allowing you to layer pieces such as a chunky sweater or jacket to create elegant looks suited to each of your silhouettes. When it comes to care, whether you prefer dry cleaning or hand washing, a technical label inside will provide you with clear guidelines to help you care for your coat in the best possible way.
