SAILOR'S PEA COAT

The pea coat originates from the short coats worn by Mediterranean sailors and pirates in the 15th-17th centuries. The Arabic word was adopted into French to describe a warm, waterproof jacket, designed to withstand storms at sea. Equipped with a wide collar to protect the neck and flap hip pockets, it provided insulation against salty winds and squalls without impeding maneuvers. Later adopted by fishermen and then by civilians, it retains its utilitarian maritime purpose.

Woven in Portugal from pure wool cloth at 790 g/m², its exceptional density ensures a reassuring weight, naturally felted to trap air and repel moisture. A blend of dark blue, anthracite grey, and black, the wool breathes while providing warmth. An Italian oxford lining glides against the shirt, and functional internal pockets (piped flap for a wallet, lower chest for an agenda, rounded outer wool pocket for cards). Moroccan craftsmanship, French horn buttons, and Lyonnaise corozo securely fasten the coat.

Its generous cut (chest 52 to 56 cm), and length of 80 to 84 cm, envelops without restricting: a wide stand-up collar, straight sleeves that move freely. It drapes heavily when worn, protects at sea as well as in the city, and strengthens with the seasons.

Contact us?
What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials—Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier, etc.—and assembled in our workshop in Toulouse on traditional machines.

Each piece is designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are custom-developed: we design our own wefts, then have them woven in the world's best factories (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on antique looms. This process can take up to a year to create a new fabric.

It is this level of requirement that makes Champ de Manoeuvres unique and of high quality.
