The men's leather flight jacket, born in the cockpit
The flight jacket was born in the open cockpits of the early 20th century: it had to protect from cold at altitude while leaving the arms free in a seated position. In the United States, two models set the genre: the Air Force A-2, made from 1931, and the Navy G-1, according to the history of the flight jacket. This men's leather flight jacket takes up the logic: a thick leather, a shearling collar, ribs that shut out the cold, two large pockets.

Cut and sizing
Straight cut, with about 10 cm (4 in) of ease around the chest: enough to wear a fine knit underneath without flapping. From S to 2XL. The thick leather shapes itself to the body over time; the size guide explains how to compare with a jacket you already wear.
How to wear a men's leather flight jacket
Over a waffle henley or a turtleneck sweater, shearling collar up in full winter. With raw Japanese jeans or an officer chino, without looking further. Without the collar, over a chambray shirt, it becomes a mid-season jacket.
Care
Leather is not washed: no machine, no soaking, no dry cleaning. Dust it with a soft, dry cloth after each wear, and nourish it twice a year with a leather milk or cream, in a thin layer. If it gets wet in the rain, let it dry at room temperature, away from a heat source. A stain is dabbed, never rubbed. Store it on a wide hanger, away from light, never in a plastic bag.
A vegetable-tanned cowhide
Vegetable tanning is the oldest way of making a hide rot-proof, strong and supple; faster chrome tanning took over in the 20th century and remains the most common today. Ours is vegetable-tanned, done in Morocco on a thick cowhide. The process is slower, and the leather shows it: a firm hand at first, that softens with wear, and a surface that darkens and shades at the folds, elbows and pockets.
Patine et durabilité
In three years, this leather will have taken the creases of your gestures, like a pilot's jacket.
The flight jacket was born in the open cockpits of the early 20th century: protect from cold at altitude, stay free when seated. Ours takes up the logic, in vegetable-tanned cowhide, with a removable shearling collar, wool ribs knitted in France and a brass zip. Here is how it ages.
-
You only buy one flight jacket in your life, so it has to be the right one. This one is made in Morocco and finished in France, with period details. In ten years, it will be more beautiful than today, and you will know it every time you put it on.
A removable shearling collar
The collar is curly shearling, the woolly hide that serves as a barrier against the wind at the neck, where the cold gets in first. It is removable: keep it in full winter, take it off in mid-season, and the jacket changes character depending on whether you wear it.
Lampo zip, period buttons, French wool
The fastening is a Lampo zip, from the Italian maker, in size 8: a tooth size above average, stronger, in hand-patinated brass. The buttons come from unused vintage American stock. The cuffs and hem are 100% French wool rib, knitted in France, which limit air entering. The two large patch pockets close with snap fasteners hidden under the leather. The jacket is made in Morocco and finished in France.
We are here to help you
Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you choose with confidence.
Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.
Every piece is designed to last, evolve and patinate over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we imagine our own weaves, then have them woven in the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. This process can take up to a year to produce a new cloth.
It is this level of exacting standards that sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
