Japanese Sashiko Jacket

Born in the Japanese countryside, sashiko first met a simple need: to extend the life of work clothes. Through regular stitches, garments are reinforced, repaired, and layered. This practice, rooted in the Edo period, gradually moved beyond strict utilitarian use to become part of everyday wear, without losing its direct connection to the material.

Here, the fabric is a dense sashiko cotton, around 18–19 oz, with a slightly embossed texture. The weave creates relief and structure while allowing air to circulate. Indigo-dyed using a rope technique, it evolves over time, marking areas of friction and revealing lighter contrasts.

The jacket has a comfortable fit, structured without rigidity. The pockets are lined, and the volumes are balanced. It wears like a work garment softened by use, gaining character as it ages.

What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials—Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier, etc.—and assembled in our workshop in Toulouse on traditional machines.

Each piece is designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are custom-developed: we design our own wefts, then have them woven in the world's best factories (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on antique looms. This process can take up to a year to create a new fabric.

It is this level of requirement that makes Champ de Manoeuvres unique and of high quality.
