In 1920, Benjamin Russell Jr., quarterback of the University of Alabama football team, had had enough of itchy, irritating wool jerseys. With his father's knitting mill, he developed a cotton version that didn't itch; it would give rise to the Russell Athletic Company, and to the sweatshirt. The sportswear then left the field for campuses, then the everyday wardrobe, without changing shape. This men's grey sweatshirt keeps the silhouette, in a heathered grey, a mix of light and dark fibres, that goes with everything and hides the small marks of everyday life.

Fitted, not shaped: the sweatshirt follows the body without squeezing it, with a clean drop at the shoulders. From XS to 3XL. Take your usual size; the size guide helps you decide if you hesitate.
How to wear a men's grey sweatshirt
Over a blue oxford shirt, collar out: the campus formula, and the right one. With cuffed raw Japanese jeans, as in our photos, or with a beige chino. Under a work jacket, the dense fleece replaces a middle layer in mid-season. On its own over a white T-shirt, it is enough for the last fine days.

A collar made for the shirt
The neckline is drawn to let a shirt collar through without strain: that is the original use on campuses, and the right way to wear a sweatshirt. Under the ribbed round neck, a triangular gusset holds the neckline; at the back, a half-moon yoke stops it sagging. The rib edges are topstitched in flat lock, a flat seam that leaves no ridge inside and resists pulling.

Japanese yarn, a 380 g/m² fleece
French terry is a fleece whose reverse keeps its yarn loops. Here it is semi-brushed: softer than a raw terry, it keeps its thickness where a fully brushed fleece packs down. The outside is slubbed, with a yarn of slightly varying thickness that gives a lively grain rather than a smooth look. The yarn is Japanese, chosen for its regularity, because on a heavy fleece a weak point in the yarn quickly becomes a point of wear. The sweatshirt is knitted in Portugal, then goes through a vintage wash that softens the hand from the first wear.
