A men's pea coat lined like a field jacket
The pea coat comes from the European naval wardrobe, worn from the end of the 17th century to face cold, wind and damp at sea. Its shape prevailed by necessity: double-breasted, high collar, protective volume, freedom of movement. This men's pea coat keeps that memory, and adds a soldier's idea: a quilted lining inspired by the M65 liner, stitched in diamonds and sewn in France, which strengthens the insulation without weighing down the silhouette.
Cut and sizing
Roomy cut, with about 18 cm (7 in) of ease around the chest: take your usual size, the volume anticipates layering. Even with a slim build, avoid going down a size, the melton would lose its drape. From S to XXL, half chest runs from 57 to 65 cm (22.4 to 25.6 in), front length from 81 to 83.5 cm (31.9 to 32.9 in) and sleeve from 63.8 to 65.6 cm (25.1 to 25.8 in). To measure your half chest, run the tape under the armpits, around the chest, and divide by two.
How to wear a men's pea coat
Collar up and a wool beanie, hands in the pockets, as in our photos. Over a lambswool sweater and a chino for town. Over a moleskin work jacket when winter sets in. For a shorter version, without the quilted lining, see the sailor's pea coat.

Mid-thigh, slit pockets
Where the sailor's pea coat stops below the hip, this one drops to mid-thigh, in a roomy cut with sharp shoulders. The volume is meant for layering: a thick sweater, a work jacket. The pockets are slit, with no flap, built into the cut, so you slip the hands straight in.

It is the coat of a lifetime: one of the densest French wools, French making, a soldier's lining. Its double-breasted front closes left or right depending on the wind. The day you put it on, you know you won't look for another coat.
US Navy anchor buttons
The buttons come from dormant US Navy stock, in brass or nickel, stamped with a naval anchor. The double-breasted front is reversible: you close it left or right depending on which side the wind comes from, as on deck. The high collar with a wide lapel protects the throat and nape once turned up.
A melton woven in Mazamet
The wool melton weighs 800 g/m². It is woven in France by Jules Tournier, a family mill in Mazamet, in the Tarn, since 1865. This density provides most of the warmth; the lining does the rest. The coat is made in the north of France.
