Why a navy work jacket rather than a sweater
First, because a sweater has neither pockets nor buttons. Second, because a woven jacket stays stiff at first wear. So we knitted the construction of our workshop jackets: straight button front, open collar, three patch pockets. The result is a piece that closes like a jacket but folds and packs like a knit.
Navy also has an advantage that khaki does not: it absorbs light rather than reflecting it. It therefore gives the silhouette structure and goes as well with raw jeans as with wool trousers.

Does this navy work jacket itch?
No, because first-clip wool has finer fibres than adult wool. It feels soft, including at the collar.
Can it be worn at the office?
Yes. The navy and the straight button front give it the look of a smoking-jacket-style house jacket; its patch pockets, on the other hand, recall its working origin.

A wool that works while you work
The first clip of the young lamb gives the finest fibre, but also the one richest in lanolin. This natural wax repels light moisture; the loft of the knit also traps air and insulates from the cold. Finally, its hygroscopic qualities carry away perspiration when you come into the warm. That is why this wool is called thermoregulating: it corrects by itself the swings the day imposes on it.
A good fibre is not enough, however. This one is also silkier and stronger than ordinary wools; as a result it does not pill and does not dull after two winters.

You buy the Journeyman for a simple reason: you no longer have to choose between being warm and looking good. Navy goes with everything you already own, the wool regulates heat and cold by itself, and the lined collar won't fray. It is the piece you will put on without thinking from November to May, for years.
The details that make this navy wool jacket last
The collars and cuffs are made in double thickness, and the ribbed edges stabilise the most stressed areas. The selvedge runs along the bottom hem of the jacket and prevents any fraying.
The knit is made in 7-gauge. It is dense enough to hold the silhouette, but supple enough not to mark after a day sitting down. One kilogram on the scale: neither a light jacket nor a coat.
How to wear it
On its own first, over a T-shirt or a shirt, as long as the season allows. Then, when the cold sets in, under a coat, where it plays the part of a discreet second layer. It joins the rest of our work jackets, in the easiest colour to live with.
Origin and making
This jacket is drawn in France first. Then the raw material, spun in Switzerland, goes to Morocco to be knitted and made to our specifications, in the workshop that works for the biggest houses.
We designed it as a work sweater: the warmth of wool, the hold of a cardigan, the logic of our workshop jackets. It is an openly hybrid piece, and that is also what our "champ de manoeuvres" is about.
A short history of work blue
If navy is today the easiest colour in the wardrobe, it owes that to the factory.
- 1844, Lyon: Adolphe Lafont designs the "largeot", the first worker's trouser designed around the tool. The workshop he founds gives rise to the blue work jacket.
- Late 19th century: railway workers, mechanics and handlers adopt the straight-buttoned jacket. Blue prevails because it hides grease and withstands repeated washing.
- 1920s and 1930s: the workshop jacket becomes standardised: cotton twill or moleskin, straight cut, three patch pockets. The template will not change again.
- 1960s: navy leaves the railway platform. Architects, painters and teachers adopt it, for its neutrality as much as its strength.
- Today: we take up its construction, but in wool knit: the same jacket, for winters spent more sitting than standing.
Three ways to wear it today
- As an office jacket: over a white shirt and grey wool trousers. Navy plays the part of the blazer, without the stiffness of tailoring.
- At the weekend, collar open: over a T-shirt and raw jeans, sleeves pushed up. It is the simplest combination, and probably the right one.
- Travelling: the knit does not crease; it rolls into a bag and recovers by itself. It usefully replaces a woven jacket.

Care
This jacket is machine washable at home. Wash it by hand in cold water, or on the wool cycle at 30 °C (86 °F) with a suitable detergent. Then squeeze gently and dry flat, reshaping the piece. Dry cleaning is therefore not necessary.
Does the navy bleed?
No. It is a wool dyed in the yarn before knitting, not a surface dye. The colour therefore stays stable wash after wash.
