The men's white T-shirt, out of the uniform
In 1913, the US Navy issued its sailors a white cotton undershirt with a round neck and short sleeves, to wear under the uniform. On chores, in the first submarines or in the tropics, the men took off their jumper and worked in a T-shirt. After the Second World War, veterans wore it with their uniform trousers, as a garment in its own right. This men's white T-shirt keeps the simple shape, and takes care of what you don't see at first glance.

How to wear a men's white T-shirt
With raw selvedge jeans, the simplest outfit there is. With military bermuda shorts, in summer. Under an open Hawaiian shirt, or under a sashiko jacket, where the white brings out the jacket's material. Tucked into a beige chino, it holds a simple summer outfit.

A mercerised cotton, smooth and clean
Mercerisation was invented in 1844 by John Mercer, who treated cotton with caustic soda: the fibre becomes stronger, takes dye better and gains a lustrous look. In 1890, Lowe improved the process by holding the textile stretched during the operation, to stop it shrinking. Our cotton is mercerised: the surface stays smooth and clean, without fluff, wash after wash.

The white T-shirt is the simplest garment there is, and the hardest to get right. This one has the silky feel of mercerised cotton and a cut that holds. It is the one you put under a jacket to look impeccable without effort.
A bias-cut collar, the old way
The collar is set on the bias, the old way, at a width of 25 mm. It is slightly scooped, to avoid a too-tight collar; at the first wash, it tightens a little and settles around the neck. The seams are assembled in a close cover stitch, stronger than ordinary assembly. The T-shirt is made in Portugal.
A 220 g/m² 1×1 rib jersey
Jersey takes its name from the island of Jersey, in the Channel, where fishermen's underwear and sweaters were knitted from the Middle Ages. This jersey was first wool; today it is also knitted in cotton. Ours is knitted in 1×1 rib, a knit that stretches and recovers, at 220 g/m²: dense enough not to be see-through, supple enough to drape. It breathes, and creases little in wear.
