The men's white poplin shirt, with a paper feel
A men's white poplin shirt is judged first by the hand. This one is dry and dense, what is called a paper feel: it crackles slightly under the fingers, and that is what lets it hold a straight collar without any starch. The hold comes from the weave, not from a finish that would wash out. The white is an optical white, frank, that leans neither ecru nor blue. It demands a dense poplin: on a light cloth, the skin would show through.

Cut and sizing
Fitted cut, that follows the torso without marking it. From S to XXL. Take your usual size for a clean fit, or one size up if you prefer a classic ease. The size guide helps you decide.
How to wear a men's white poplin shirt
On its own, sleeves rolled up, with a beige chino, as in our photos: optical white works all year. Collar out over a navy lambswool sweater, the safest formula in the wardrobe. Under a work jacket, the contrast between the crisp poplin and the raw canvas avoids an over-dressed effect. With navy corduroy trousers, it dresses a winter outfit.
Care
Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F), short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent; bleach ends up yellowing white instead of reviving it. No tumble dryer and no fabric softener. Air dry, then iron while still slightly damp: poplin then irons without effort and recovers its dry drape.
Genuine mother-of-pearl buttons
Mother-of-pearl is the iridescent inner lining of certain mollusc shells; it has long been used to make buttons. It is recognised by three things: its weight, its coolness to the touch, and an iridescence that changes with the angle. A resin button stays warm, light, and its reflection does not move. Mother-of-pearl does not scratch under the iron; it is, however, more brittle, a compromise you accept on a shirt made to last.
Patina and durability
In three years, this white shirt will still hold its collar by itself.
A white shirt gives itself away quickly: a collar that sags, a cloth that lets the skin show through, buttons scratched by the iron. This one is cut from a dry, dense poplin with a paper feel, which holds the collar straight without starch. The buttons are genuine mother-of-pearl. Here is how it ages.
-
firm material, solid color, clean finishes.
-
the piece softens where it works the most.
-
wear creases mark themselves and return from one wear to the next.
-
follow the composition instructions; excessive heat and tumble dryers are to be avoided.
-
borders and friction zones soften first.
-
the color shades with use, without aging all at once.
-
the piece is made: supple, familiar, always holding.
-
a seam, a button, a snag is mended in the workshop.
-
nearly three years: a well-kept piece gains in character what it loses in newness.
Every man needs an irreproachable white shirt, the one you bring out for the days that count. This one is opaque, frank, and its hold comes from the weave, not from a finish that disappears at the first wash. It is the shirt you feel ready in.
A very tight plain weave
Poplin is woven with a warp thread finer than the weft thread. This difference creates fine horizontal ribs, almost invisible, and makes the cloth smooth, strong and barely transparent, which matters doubly on a white. Originally, poplin combined a silk warp with a weft of linen, cotton or wool; ours is entirely cotton. Its name comes from "papeline", attested in 1667, after Poperinge, a Flemish town famous from the 13th to the 16th century for its cloth. The shirt is made in Morocco.
We are here to help you
Find here the answers to the most frequently asked questions to help you choose with confidence.
Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.
Every piece is designed to last, evolve and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we design our own weaves, then have them woven by the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. A new cloth can take up to a year to come to life.
This exacting standard is what sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
