The men's turtleneck sweater, from the quay to the suit
The turtleneck appeared at the end of the 19th century as a work garment, worn by sailors, fishermen and workers for its practicality. It then passed to sport, then, in the 1930s, was knitted in finer fibres and began to be worn with a suit. During the Second World War, it became the emblematic dress of the Royal Air Force. This men's turtleneck sweater does not need to be reinvented; we improved it from the inside.

Cut and sizing
Fitted cut, which respects the natural proportions of the body, without excess volume. From S to XXL, in heathered navy or anthracite. Take your usual size; the size guide helps you decide if you hesitate.
How to wear a men's turtleneck sweater
On its own: the fineness of the gauge allows it without the bulky winter-sweater effect. Under a work jacket or a blazer, the dense knit passes without bulk. Under a pea coat, the historic pairing: the turtleneck replaces the scarf and closes the neckline. Below, flannel trousers keep the outfit entirely in wool.
Care
Machine washable at home, dry cleaning is not necessary: hand wash cold, or wool cycle at 30 °C (86 °F) with a wool detergent. Do not rub or wring: press out the water, roll it in a towel, then dry it flat without fail, reshaped; hung wet, the collar loses its shape. Steam from a distance rather than ironing. Store folded, away from light, with cedar.
First clip, against the neck
The virgin Schoeller® wool used here comes from the first clip: this initial cut gives the animal's finest and most regular fibres. On a turtleneck, the material is in permanent contact with the neck, the most sensitive area, where a thicker wool quickly reminds you of itself. The fineness of the fibre is not a luxury there but a condition. Wool also manages moisture: it keeps you warm without making you feel clammy, with no sense of suffocation.
Patina and durability
In three years, this turtleneck will still be soft against your neck.
The turtleneck appeared at the end of the 19th century on sailors, fishermen and workers. It entered the suit in the 1930s, then the Royal Air Force during the war. Ours is knitted in first-clip virgin Schoeller wool, in 10-gauge: dense without being thick. Here is how it ages.
-
firm material, solid color, clean finishes.
-
the piece softens where it works the most.
-
wear creases mark themselves and return from one wear to the next.
-
follow the composition instructions; excessive heat and tumble dryers are to be avoided.
-
borders and friction zones soften first.
-
the color shades with use, without aging all at once.
-
the piece is made: supple, familiar, always holding.
-
a seam, a button, a snag is mended in the workshop.
-
nearly three years: a well-kept piece gains in character what it loses in newness.
On a turtleneck, the fineness of the fibre is not a luxury: it decides whether the neck itches or not. This one doesn't itch, cuts the wind and goes under a jacket. It is the piece that replaces the shirt and tie on winter days.
10-gauge, dense without being thick
Gauge expresses the fineness of the knitting machine: the higher the number, the finer the knit. In 10-gauge you get a knit that is dense but not thick, tight enough to cut the wind, fine enough to go under a jacket without bulk. This density requires more yarn, and a better yarn to stay supple: gauge and fibre are decided together.
Fully fashioned, 9 cm cuffs
The panels are knitted fully fashioned, each to its shape, then assembled: the seams stay flat and precise, and the sweater follows the proportions of the body instead of being cut from a large panel. The cuffs, extended to 9 cm, hold the sleeve in place and protect the wrist from the cold. The sweater is knitted and made up in Morocco.
We’re here to help
Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions, to help you choose with confidence.
Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.
Every piece is designed to last, evolve and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we design our own weaves, then have them woven by the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. A new cloth can take up to a year to come to life.
This exacting standard is what sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
