The men's light grey sweater, for winter light

This men's light grey sweater has a quality you measure mostly in January: it reflects light instead of absorbing it. Under a low sky, a dark sweater hollows the features; a light grey does the opposite. Its knit is heathered, and it is that mix of yarns that gives it relief up close, where a plain grey would stay flat.

  • Material: 100% lambswool, knitted
  • Origin: Italian wool, made in Morocco

Cut and sizing

Straight cut, neither fitted nor loose, from S to XL. Take your usual size. The size guide helps you decide.

How to wear a men's light grey sweater

Against dark: over a navy chino or raw jeans, the contrast lifts the light toward the face. Tone on tone, under an anthracite pea coat: two greys of different values create depth. Over a white shirt, collar out, provided you keep the bottom dark.

Care

Machine washable at home, dry cleaning is not necessary: hand wash cold, or wool cycle at 30 °C (86 °F) with a wool detergent. Do not rub or wring: press out the water, roll it in a towel, then dry flat, reshaped. Hot water and the tumble dryer felt the wool. Store folded, away from light, with cedar.

Light colours show everything

A light grey does not forgive a mediocre wool: it is the colour on which pilling shows most. That is why the first clip counts double here. The wool comes from the lamb's first cut, spun in Italy: a finer, longer and more regular fibre than adult wool, which pills much less. A gentle combing is enough to remove the few bobbles of the break-in period.

Patina and durability

In three years, this light grey will still brighten your January mornings.

Under a low sky, a dark sweater hollows the features; a light grey returns the light. Its heathered knit, in first-clip lambswool spun in Italy, gives it relief up close. And its long fibre barely pills, a real asset on a light colour. Here is how it ages.

  1. dense wool, even surface, structured hold.

  2. it softens at the shoulders and elbows and follows your movements.

  3. arm and waist creases mark gently, without wrinkling.

  4. brushing after wear lays the nap back in place and removes dust.

  5. hung and aired, the wool loses creases and odors; cleaning stays rare.

  6. the nap lies down in the friction zones, the color gains relief.

  7. the cloth has found its shape, shoulders and collar sit right.

  8. wool withstands flexing far better than cotton: the cloth lasts.

  9. a well-kept cloth gains patina without wearing out; a button is sewn back, a lining is mended.

It is the sweater that gives you a good complexion in midwinter. It softens a dark coat and brightens the face. You don't think of light grey, until the day you wear it and don't want to take it off.

Finishing with no breaks

The crew neck is set in 1×1 rib in the same material, with no attached collar. The cuffs and hem are finished in integrated ribbed edges, which recover their shape after each wear. The sleeves are set in raglan, with a diagonal seam from the neckline to the underarm. The sweater is knitted in Morocco in fully fashioned, each piece knitted to its shape before assembly.

We are here to help you

Contact us?
What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials (Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier…) and assembled on vintage machines.

Every piece is designed to last, evolve and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are developed to our own specifications: we design our own weaves, then have them woven by the best mills in the world (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on old looms. A new cloth can take up to a year to come to life.

This exacting standard is what sets Champ de Manoeuvres apart.
