Description

Embark on a journey through the ages with the legendary Pea Coat, better known as a peacoat. This long, loose-fitting coat, proudly worn by sailors since the 18th century, has earned a solid reputation as a bulwark against the cold and humidity .

The two rows of buttons not only provide extra style… They allowed sailors to fasten their coats on the left or right side . No matter which way the wind blew, there was no risk of it getting between the panels of the fabric. Protection reinforced by a high collar up to the neck to stay warm despite the raging elements!  The pea coat is the faithful companion to face the most extreme conditions.

The Pea Coat is the garment worn by these intrepid sailors, braving raging seas and merciless storms to defend their homeland or the fruits of their hard-earned catch.

From the quay to the catwalk: from maritime origins to the big names in cinema

It was in the 1960s that this sailor's coat became a symbol of style, passing from the shoulders of fishermen to those of iconic personalities such as Prévert, Brel, Gainsbourg, Robert Redford, Al Pacino and Steve McQueen.

Today we are proud to present our modern interpretation of the Pea Coat from our Pacifica Militaria collection .

The Pea Coat Reinvented: New Technologies, Same Warmth

Originally, the Pea Coat was made of wool covered with a mixture of tar and turpentine. A clever combination that made the whole thing waterproof, but which presented real toxic risks.

Our Pea Coat pea coat has kept the fundamentals of the model, namely an 800 gr/ m2 wool cloth. A generous density for optimal insulation against the cold . It is covered with a quilted lining with regular and padded patterns for perfect thermal insulation . Finally, we have chosen to cover it with polyester, a lightweight, water-resistant and easy-to-dry fabric.

The History of the Pea Coat: From Maritime Past to Fashion Icon

The Pea Coat, whose origins are still debated, could have been inspired by the wool capes of Berber pirates or invented by Dutch sailors in the 17th century. Adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1740, it conquered the French Navy and the US Navy in 1888.

Witness to the great events of the 20th century, from the Bay of Pigs landings to the Vietnam War, the Pea Coat has become a symbol of military fashion and the heroes of history.
