The sashiko jacket, a stitch to reinforce
Sashiko, "little stabs", is a traditional Japanese embroidery, born in the Edo period (1603-1867) of a practical need: reinforcing work clothes. Worn areas were stitched and patches fixed in place this way, often in white thread on an indigo-dyed cloth. This sashiko jacket is cut from a cloth that takes up that relief in the weave: a slightly waffled, dense surface that gives hold to the piece while letting air circulate.

Cut and sizing
Straight, comfortable cut, with tailored sleeves and about 10 cm (4 in) of ease around the chest. Our model is 1.82 m (6 ft) tall and wears size M. From S to XXL; the size chart and the size guide help you decide.
How to wear a sashiko jacket
Open over a white T-shirt and a beige chino, as in our photos. Over a white poplin shirt with fatigue trousers: the white brings out the relief of the indigo. With raw selvedge jeans, two indigos of different textures.
Care
Machine washable at home: 30 °C (86 °F) inside out, short cycle, mild detergent with no bleaching agent, and separately the first few times, because indigo bleeds. No tumble dryer and no fabric softener. Air dry in the shade; iron at medium heat, on the reverse, to protect the colour.
Three pockets outside, two inside
The jacket builds on our Marina jacket. It keeps its shawl collar and three outer patch pockets, all lined. Inside, two pockets complete the set: a buttoned patch pocket, and a welt pocket closed with a corozo button. On the front, the corozo buttons, with their marbled look, stand out against the indigo blue.
Patine et durabilité
In three years, this sashiko will have the relief of a garment repaired a thousand times.

It is a rare piece, in a heavy cloth you almost never find in Europe. Its relief catches the light and its indigo shades through wear. It is the jacket you notice from ten metres away, and look at closely.
An Okayama indigo
The cloth is made in Japan, from American cotton, and weighs about 18.7 to 19 oz. It is dyed with indigo in Okayama, by rope dyeing: the yarn passes through the indigo baths and turns from yellow to blue as it oxidises in contact with air. The indigo stays on the surface of the fibre. Through wear, the jacket therefore lightens at the rubbing points, elbows, pockets and collar, and its relief reads more and more clearly.
Made in Portugal, ozone-washed
The jacket is made in Portugal, to our specifications. It then goes through an ozone wash, a gas, which gives it a first patina and limits indigo bleeding in the first wears. Like garments quilted with sashiko, it is made to be repaired rather than replaced: the day an elbow gives way, our repair workshop mends the cloth.
