Jungle Tropical Jacket 1st Pattern

Designed in the early 1960s for US armed forces deployed in tropical theaters of operation, this lightweight jacket met the demands of asymmetrical warfare in dense, humid environments. The environmental constraints—extreme heat, high humidity, abrasive vegetation—required equipment that lightened the logistical load while preserving mobility and minimal protection. Adopted as an early standard (1st Pattern), it spread through massive industrial production, lastingly influencing utilitarian uniforms with its functional simplicity, transcending its military use to proliferate in civilian vintage wardrobes.

Initially assembled with flat-felled seams and reinforced overlock stitching, the construction prioritizes resistance to fraying (OG-107 ripstop cotton fabric, approximately 8-10 oz/yd²). Its 100% cotton composition ensures high breathability (air permeability > 200 CFM) and moderate dimensional stability after washing, with a natural patina from fiber hydrolysis. Ergonomics are based on accessible patch pockets and a straight cut promoting joint range of motion. Standardized for serial reproducibility, its performance (abrasion resistance > 20,000 Martindale cycles) and multi-use adaptability make it a utilitarian benchmark, evolving into contemporary variations without structural obsolescence.

The balanced cut (hip length, structured shoulders) optimizes the fit for unconstrained daily mobility, while the patinated olive fabric (controlled softening, no loss of density). Original resin buttons and high-tenacity thread prioritize function (quick access) and durability over pure aesthetics. Product logic: exceptional cost/performance ratio (repeated washes without deformation > 95%), favoring actual use—versatile layering, lightweight protection—over planned obsolescence, for a timeless historical piece.

What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials—Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier, etc.—and assembled in our workshop in Toulouse on traditional machines.

Each piece is designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are custom-developed: we design our own wefts, then have them woven in the world's best factories (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on antique looms. This process can take up to a year to create a new fabric.

It is this level of requirement that makes Champ de Manoeuvres unique and of high quality.
