Chambray Work Shirt

The chambray shirt originated in 18th-century Cambrai, France, finely woven for workers and peasants under Henry IV. Adopted by American blue-collar workers in the 19th century, then by sailors and soldiers, it resisted daily wear while drying quickly. Popularized in Japan and Hollywood, it transitioned from workwear to a timeless civilian wardrobe staple.

Dyed in Japan using *aizome* – natural indigo from the indigo plant – blue warp threads interlace with an ecru weft for a deep, irregular Japan blue. Factory-aged on a Grade A chambray (approximately 8 oz), the fabric softens its raw feel without wearing out the fibers. Pre-washed, it retains its color after hand washes, revealing subtle effects at the creases. Assembled on a single-needle Union Special 37800 with strong vintage seams; double-needle patch chest pockets, reinforced with bar tacks, firmly sewn indigo cat-eye buttons.

Its straight cut (chest 51 to 59 cm), length 71 to 77.5 cm, drapes loosely: take one size up for a relaxed fit. It flows softly over the torso, breathes well layered or alone, and adapts to daily life without creasing.

What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials—Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier, etc.—and assembled in our workshop in Toulouse on traditional machines.

Each piece is designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are custom-developed: we design our own wefts, then have them woven in the world's best factories (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on antique looms. This process can take up to a year to create a new fabric.

It is this level of requirement that makes Champ de Manoeuvres unique and of high quality.
