Birth of an icon

The origins of the Hawaiian shirt date back to the late 19th century when Japanese migrants arrived in Hawaii to work in the sugarcane fields.
They work bare-chested in the fields, which shocks the Christian missionaries. They are then forced to wear a cotton shirt with mother-of-pearl or coconut buttons, to which are added local flowers as well as decorations usually found on kimonos.
Locally called aloha shirt in reference to Hawaiian aloha, this shirt appeared around 1905 in the shop of a Japanese immigrant who made it with kimono fabrics by Koichiro Miyamoto known as Musa-Shiya the Shirtmaker. In 1935, an advertisement for this type of shirt was published on the island by a local newspaper.
Let's go back to the 1930s when the first more contemporary shirts appeared in Hawaii and then on the American continent. They were imported by tourists and soldiers returning from Hawaii. Initially worn by surfers, they became popular after World War II. The Aloha shirt was born.

What is the quality of Champ de Manœuvres products?

Our clothes are made from exceptional materials—Japanese selvedge denim, French wool from Tournier, etc.—and assembled in our workshop in Toulouse on traditional machines.

Each piece is designed to last, evolve, and develop a patina over time. The fabrics are custom-developed: we design our own wefts, then have them woven in the world's best factories (Japan, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco), often on antique looms. This process can take up to a year to create a new fabric.

It is this level of requirement that makes Champ de Manoeuvres unique and of high quality.
